LONDON : Sania Mirza and her partner Martina Hingis produced a stirring fightback to claim the Wimbledon women’s doubles title under the Centre Court roof lights on Saturday.
This is Sania Mirza’s first-ever women’s doubles Grand Slam title.
Sania’s partner Hingis held her serve to seal a 5-7 7-6(4) 7-5 win over Russians Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
The match had been stopped at 5-5 in the third set to allow the roof to be shut as darkness fell on the All England Club.
For Sania Mirza, it was a maiden women’s doubles title at a Grand Slam although she has won three mixed doubles titles at the majors.
Sania is winner of three mixed doubles Grand Slam trophies. She won Australian Open (2009) and French Open (2012) with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi and the US Open with Bruno Soares last year.
Hingis won the Wimbledon doubles with Helena Sukova in 1996 and Jana Novotna in 1998.
